QHT 008: Interview with Philip Bloom, Videographer and HD DSLR Movie Maker

by Dave Warner on October 30, 2009

This is a Quick Hit Podcast short and we’re going to talk to Philip Bloom about the video capability in the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 7D, the new Canon 1D Mark IV and other DSLR’s. In this interview, we go over fusion – the melding of video into still cameras, how he has become one of the leading experts on HD DSLR film-making, the equipment still photographers may need to add, new markets created by this capability, and some of his new training materials that will help still photographers AND videographers.

Shot over a couple of nights, taking the 5D Mark II out on the streets and getting shots of the inhabitants and visitors. No lighting, no grading. This is what came out of the camera image wise. All handheld and helped by using the Z-Finder from Zacuto to give the camera a proper viewfinder and improve stability. All shot using one lens. A Nikon mount Zeiss ZF 50mm f1.4 Music is performed by Stacey Kent: You can’t take that away from me. Converted to 24p JES De-Interlacer. Thanks to Dennis Lennie and Teodor Stoyanov.

Bloom, i like much when you use the EX3 camera with 35mm lens. Terrible wobble effect with photo cameras.

I support the video DSLR movement.

I say pioneers like Philip Bloom and others keep it up! You’re opening up a new world of filmmaking possibilities.

As for veteran filmmakers, many are saying that DSLR’s are helping them become better DP’s because of their current limitations.

The DSLR Cinema movement is really moving forward and I think it’s here to stay.
