abstract art

First question everyone is going to ask is “why an Artist – what has this got to do with Canon Photography?” Or…”have you gone off the wagon and it’s only Episode 7?”, and finally “why an abstract Artist – we’re photographers, we deal in realism!” Well, I’ve known Butch Skynear for a long time, in fact well enough to ‘trade’ him a Canon 10D and an Epson 7600 printer. In return, I got some of his paintings and I felt it was a fair trade. He used the camera to record things that interested him for his paintings, and a couple of times used some images that I shot for his Abstracts.

However, spending that time around the old man taught me a LOT about my photography, and maybe myself. Let’s face it, you have to be REALLY motivated to work at something for decades, have people constantly saying one thing or another about it, going through good times and bad, making money and sometimes not. Wait a minute – it’s starting to sound like photography, isn’t it? Anyway, my feeling was that an Artist can teach us a lot about photography and how to visualize things, and maybe give us some ideas about how to transition from being just a photographer, to a photographic artist.

In this episode, Butch talks about how he uses a camera in his work flow, the role it plays in his finished product, art concepts that would be appropriate for photographers to know, the melding going on between technology, art and photography and a host of other subjects. His work is featured in private collections around the world, he’s shown in several galleries across the United States and has had an exhibit in the Smithsonian.
