light painting

LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. This week, Dave interviews night photographer Troy Paiva. Wandering the deserted back roads of the American Southwest, Troy Paiva has explored the abandoned underbelly of America since the 1970s. Since 1989 he’s been taking pictures of it . . . at night, by the light of the full moon with a technique called ‘light painting’.

Since 1998 his Lost America site has been online in one form or another, and Troy’s low cost / high impact lighting techniques have been adopted by amateur and professional photographers all over the world.

In this episode, Troy talks about light painting and what it is, why his sole focus on it, what market there is for this work, how he chooses his locations and books that he’s published on this type of work. We created a multi-media show of his images with an explanation of each one with the full podcast interview (above) and our typical show player and download, which is below.

Show Sponsors: ExpoImaging, Inc., onOne Software. Also, podcast network commercials from Rosh Sillars New Media Photographer, Jim Goldstein EXIF and beyond and Martin Bailey Photography.

LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. This week, Dave interviews sports photographer Dave Black . As a freelance photographer for over 30 years Dave’s work has primarily centered on the sports industry including coverage of 12 Olympic Games, the Masters, Kentucky Derby, Daytona 500, and the NFL and NCAA championships. He has worked on assignment for such publications as Sports Illustrated, Time, and Newsweek.  Known for his creative use of lighting and in particular with the artistic technique of light painting, Dave’s portfolio continues to broaden with work in the commercial and advertising industry, and with specialized lighting projects including work for the National Geographic and their book Where Valor Rests, Arlington National Cemetery. (Editor’s Note: Once again, please forgive the poorer audio quality on my end – I’m still trying to replace equipment from the lightning strike!)

In this episode, Dave talks about his style of photography, his ‘hard-core’ approach to speed lighting, the turning point in his career, his Workshop at the Ranch, what it takes to get THE shot, his book, lightpainting and where he would shoot if he could stay somewhere for one whole month. You’ll be as surprised at the answer as I was!
