Episode 0049: Interview with Gary Martin, Coastal Photographer

by Dave Warner on May 4, 2010

LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week’s episode, Dave interviews Coastal Photographer Gary Martin. Gary has been engaged in photography in one form or another for over 40 years. He got interested in low light photography and lighthouses about 20 years ago while living in North Carolina, the home of Cape Hatteras. Gary especially enjoys photographing lighthouses in low light and in stormy conditions.

In this episode, Gary talks about his use of film, how his scientific knowledge affects his approach to his photography, Fuji film, his use of DSLR’s for wave photography, time exposures, equipment setup, best coastlines to photograph, how to get into galleries and much more. We created a special video of Gary’s images with his explanation of each that plays (above) and then the full podcast interview, which is below.

WOW, photographer Gary Martin’s photographs are the best I’ve ever seen. What a fantastic and interesting subject–lighthouses! I learned so much from the 44 minute interview and then the 28 minute talk with the Michigan lighthouse photographs. Hopefully one day I will be able to be half as good as Gary. He has a great ability and he captures the moments perfectly. His website http://www.coastalbeacons.com is massive with so many fantastic, colorful photos and adventures.
Thanks for having him on here. Hopefully he’ll be on again in the future.
